Wormwood Herb Organic Cut

Artemisia absinthium
Wormwood belongs to the genus Artemisia, which includes around 400 species. Many herbs in this genus are known for their health benefits and ritual uses, and are of great cultural importance. For example, sweet Annie (A. annua) an anti-malarial, and tarragon (A. dracunculus) is well known for its culinary purposes.

Wormwood, already a classic herb in late antiquity, has been used for many centuries as a bitter tonic, stomachic, vermifuge, and stimulant, but also in the production of liqueurs (e.g., vermouth and absinthe). With its powerful taste, wormwood is amongst the main bitter tonics used in modern Western herbalism (Mills & Bone, 2005). According to the European Medicine Agency (2017), its main uses include anorexia, atonic dyspepsia, and worm infestation.

Health benefits.

Although the herb can be commonly used to flavor beverages and liquors in small amounts, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration classifies this herb as unsafe due to the presence of thujone. Today, wormwood, in small amounts, is largely reserved for use in making herbal bitters, teas or tinctures. Some believe wormwood can help stimulate digestion and relieve spasms in the intestinal tract.
