St John's Wort Organic Cut and Sifted

Hypericum perforatum

A sun-drenched herb for emotional balance and historical wellness.

Embrace the brightness of summer with St. John's Wort, an herbaceous perennial deeply rooted in traditional Western herbal practices. Historically harvested at the peak of the season—often around St. John's Day in late June—this plant is celebrated for its golden, star-shaped flowers that seem to capture the very essence of the sun. Our St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) offers a connection to centuries of folklore and herbal wisdom, providing a natural way to support a healthy mood and emotional balance.*

Features & Benefits

  • Promotes Emotional Balance: Traditionally used to help maintain a healthy mood and support emotional well-being.*
  • Rich Historical Heritage: Revered since the Middle Ages as a "holy herb," it was once believed to offer protection and has been a staple in European herbal traditions for generations.
  • Sun-Soaked Botanicals: Native to Europe and naturalized in temperate climates globally, the plant is harvested during the height of summer when its yellow blooms are most vibrant.
  • Versatile Preparation: Ideal for steeping as a comforting tea or creating extracts. Note: While excellent for tea, dried material is not recommended for making red oil infusions, as the light-reactive hypericin is diminished during drying.
  • Botanical Authenticity: We provide Hypericum perforatum, the species most commonly associated with effective herbal preparations, featuring distinctive star-shaped flowers and abundant stamens.

A Tradition of Light

St. John's Wort is more than just a wildflower found along roadsides; it is a plant steeped in history. From its folkloric roots as a protective botanical to its modern application in supporting emotional health, it carries a legacy of light and wellness.

Whether you are exploring traditional Western herbalism or seeking a time-honored addition to your wellness routine, St. John's Wort offers a gentle, natural option. Its bright yellow flowers serve as a reminder of the sun's warmth, bringing a touch of nature's resilience to your cup.

Bring this storied herb into your home and experience the enduring power of traditional wellness.

Precautions

Not to be used during phototherapy. Fair-skinned persons should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight during use. May decrease the blood levels of certain orally administered drugs. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before taking with medications. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.

Important Considerations
St. John’s Wort (SJW) contains compounds that may increase photosensitivity, particularly in fair-skinned individuals, and this effect was first observed in grazing animals. While rare at standard doses, higher doses have been associated with photosensitization.

Avoid using SJW during UV light treatments and consult a healthcare provider if taking prescription medications, as SJW may interact with various pharmaceuticals. It is especially important to avoid combining SJW with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Additionally, SJW can reduce the effectiveness of certain medicines, including hormonal contraceptives, anticoagulants, and some antivirals. While some experts suggest SJW is safe during pregnancy or nursing, others caution against its use as it may stimulate uterine contractions. Always seek medical advice before using SJW.
