The Flower of Peace
Passionflower works its magic not by forceful sedation, but by gently untangling the knots of a worried mind. It is the perfect herb for those who find it difficult to switch off their internal dialogue, feel easily distracted, or are simply exhausted from the demands of life. Modern research supports these traditional uses, highlighting its ability to reduce anxiety without impairing focus, making it a wonderful aid for finding calm even during the day.
Brew its delicate aerial parts into a soothing tea or prepare a tincture to have on hand for moments of overwhelm. It’s a beautiful, effective way to invite a sense of peace back into your body and mind.
Allow the serene spirit of Passionflower to hold you, quiet the noise, and lead you to a place of gentle repose.
Safety
Passionflower extract is classified as “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (Traub, n.d.). It is contraindicated with concurrent use of MAO inhibitors due to the presence of harman alkaloids and MOA inhibition leading to a potentiated effect, however, this has been refuted (Bergner, 2001). Passionflower can cause overexcitement and vomiting in children 4 years of age and under if given in large doses (Gagnon, 2000; Wood, 2009). Even small doses can cause emesis in some very susceptible individuals (Felter & Lloyd, 1898). There have been no recorded adverse effects to the human fetus caused by the use of passionflower by those who are pregnant (Mills & Bone, 2005), and according to the American Herbal Products Association (Gardner & McGuffin, 2013), passionflower is not contraindicated in pregnancy or lactation. However, use of passionflower during pregnancy is generally not suggested unless under the guidance of an advanced herbal clinician.
